Born in Cape Town. Educated at St Joh's College, Johannesburg, Maritzburg College and Natal University College, Pietermaritzburg. Obtained PhD from University of London at age of 25.
Worked as Senior Lecturer in English at Natal University College, and as Professor of English at Potchefstroom University College.
He was the author of Sunset in September , a suspenseful one-act play (1949), published by Van Schaik.
