The company
Jonathan Ball Publishers was founded as an independent publishing house in Johannesburg by publisher Jonathan Ball in 1976 to publish books that enlighten and entertain, with a range of non-fiction titles specialising in South African politics, current affairs, biography and history, seeking to encourage and develop the writing, publication and discussion of South African writing in the 1970s and 1980s. In the 1990s the publishing house became an imprint of the Naspers stable.
Among the many acclaimed authors on their list over the years have been Damon Galgut, Jonny Steinberg, Redi Tlhabi, Mark Gevisser, Sisonke Msimang, Justice Malala, R.W. Johnson, Richard Steyn, Margie Orford, Michiel Heyns, Ian Roberts.
