No. 1 Utopia Lane is a one-act play by Damon Galgut (1963-).

The original text

The play examines the claustrophobic hold that one man exerts over a group of weaklings, and their striving for independence. It was written while the author was a pupil at Pretoria Boys' High School[1] and first performed at the 1981 SACEE One-act Play Festival for it.

The text was published by Jonathan Ball in 1983/5?* (with Echoes of Anger). 1988).

Translations and adaptations

Translated into Afrikaans by Ray Theron as Utopialaan No.1 in April 1989.

Performance history in South Africa

1981: Performed at the at the SACEE One-act Play Festival by pupils of Pretoria Boys' High School. The play was awarded a prize at the festival.
