The Philanthropist [1] is a 1975 play by British playwright Christopher Hampton (1946- ) [2].

The original text
Written as a response to Molière's Le Misanthrope, the play was first presented at the Royal Court Theatre, Lomdon, in association with Michael Codron, on 3 August, 1970.

Performance history in South Africa
1975: Staged by the University of Cape Town Drama Department in the Little Theatre, directed by Robert Mohr, with Neville Thomas ((Philip), Philip Godawa (Donald), Peter Cartwright (John), Marjorie Smith (Celia), Bobby Heaney (Braham) Estelle de Gouveia (Araminta) and Judith Krummeck (Liz). Sets by Peter Krummeck and costumes by John Caviggia. Stage director was Brenda Kaye, the stage manager Jonathan Rands.
