Herman BingeLorenz Herman Binge (1953-2021). Actor, director, film maker and television producer.

Biography
Son of theatre academic and critic Ludwig Binge. Married to actress Joanie Combrink and his son, Ludwig Binge has also gone into theatre. Herman passed away on 16 December 2021 in Cape Town.
Training
He studied at the Stellenbosch University where he was awarded a Ll.B. degree in March 1978. After having worked in Johannesburg as state prosecuter he returned to Stellenbosch to study drama.
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
First as a law student and later as a drama student he performed on stage in productions of 4 Vertrekke en 'n Tuin, as “Mario” in Pavane, Met Permissie Gesê and Lusistrata.
He became the executive director of Waterfront Television Pty (Ltd), trading as Fremantle Productions (South Africa); which produces dramas, sitcoms, game shows, documentaries and reality television for local broadcasters, and as part of the international FremantleMedia group, represents various FremantleMedia formats in South Africa and Africa. Productions include such popular series as Death in the Family (1993), The Syndicate (1999), Known Gods (2005) Transito (2008), and the made-for-TV movies, Daisy de Melker (1993) and Pride of Africa (1997). In 1999 he made a major two-part series on Afrikaans theatre, entitled Die Tweede Lewe ("The Second Life"), for KykNet television. In this he interviewed numerous contemporary artists, academics, critics and so on.
He directed the television documentary 'Scorched Earth'. It gives an overview of the Anglo-Boer War and discusses the fate of Boer women and children in the concentration camps

Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns honorary award for a documentary television programme in Afrikaans, 2003.
