AFDA is the acronym for the African Film and Drama Academy (formally registered as the South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance)[1], and was founded in 1994 by Garth Holmes, Bata Passchier and Deon Opperman.
-The Academy
From its early beginnings of 6 students, a rented VCR and broken TV it has become one of the leading institutions of its kind in the world today. AFDA has over 1200 students, over 100 full-time staff and fully equipped campuses in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. It has had an enormous impact on film making and the stage in South Africa over the past 20 years, with many of its alumni going on to work in the performing arts industry.
In 2017 AFDA was incorporated into the Curro Holdings' wholly owned tertiary education subsidiary, Stadio Investments.
The AFDA Festival
The AFDA Festival[2] is an annual Film and TV Showcase hosted by AFDA.
