AFDA is the acronym for the African Film and Drama Academy (formally registered as the South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance)[1].

The Academy

Founded in 1994 by Garth Holmes, Bata Passchier and Deon Opperman, it started out in a campus in a derelict Lever Brothers warehouse in Milpark, Johannesburg, with 6 students, a rented VCR and broken TV, to become one of the leading institutions of its kind in the world today. By 2017 AFDA had over 3,500 alumni, 2,000 full-time students, five campuses and nine fully accredited degrees. It has had an enormous impact on film making and the stage in South Africa since its inception, with many of its alumni going on to work in the performing arts industry.

In 2017 AFDA was incorporated into Stadio Investments, a wholly owned tertiary education subsidiary of the Curro Holdings.
