The term the Institute can refer to many organizations and venues, but in reports on theatre and the arts often occurs as a reference to a venue for theatrical and other presentations and performances, and is usually some kind of educational establishment founded to provide adult education, particularly in technical subjects, to working men.
There have been numerous such (and related) intitutions across the globe over the years, and in South Africa they include the Mechanic's Institute, the Young Men's Institutes, the Young Women's Institutes, and the Railway Institutes.
For specific information on each South African, click on the names of the particular Institute in the list above.
