His Ph.D. thesis was entitled The playwright-performer as scourge and benefactor: an examination of political satire and lampoon in South African theatre, with particular reference to Pieter-Dirk Uys"(University of Natal, Durban, 1993).

As lecturer and head of department He joined the department as lecturer in 19**, and was made Professor in 1996 when he became the third head, following in the footsteps of Elizabeth Sneddon and Pieter Scholtz.
As a respected researcher and academic writer has supervised and examined numerous theses, written a number of articles in academic journals, and has long been a referee and consultant for the South African Theatre Journal and a contributor to the Encyclopaedia of South African Theatre, Film, Media and Performance.
