Rodney died while on tour in Port Elizabeth in December 1989.

As a teenager he played "Rolf" in Teddy Davies’s 1980 production of The Sound of Music in the Hofmeyr Theatre, Cape Town.
Other roles included those in , Hamlet (Glass Theatre 1982), The Nuns, Getting Out (1983) and James and the Giant Peach, Aladdin (as "Fun-Wun", PACT 1988).
