Sei Personaggi in Cerca d'Autore is an Italian play by Luigi Pirandello (1867–1936) [1]

The original text

Written in 1921 and first performed in that same year. An absurdist metatheatrical play about the relationship between authors, their characters, and theatre practitioners, it premiered at the Teatro Valle in Rome to a mixed reception, with shouts from the audience of "Manicomio!" ("Madhouse!"), though the reception improved at subsequent performances – helped when Pirandello provided for the play's third edition, published in 1925, a foreword clarifying its structure and ideas.

Translations and adaptations

The play had its American premiere in English, at the Princess Theatre on Broadway in 1922.

Translated into English in 1959 by Frederick May as Six Characters in Search of an Author.

Translated from the English into Afrikaans in 1974 by Fred le Roux as Ses Personasies op soek na 'n Skrywer.

An adaptation to South African circumstances was written and directed by Sibusiso Mamba in 2016.
