Biography
He danced at Switzerland’s Basel Tanz Festival and performed a pas de deux for Queen Elizabeth II. Twice a year over 1995-1999, he worked and performed to acclaim with the Washington Ballet.
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
In 1993, Cekwana was the first black choreographer to be appointed as a resident artist in the history of the performing arts councils in South Africa.
In 1999, he was also a member of Floating Outfit Project. He appeared in Jay Pather’s critically feted A South African Siddhartha at the National Arts Festival and a performance at the Nico Malan Theatre Complex and the Confluences conference organised by the UCT Ballet School. In 1999, he choreographed Jerry Pooe’s Peace in the Valley.
In 2000, he choreographed Pooe's Living Room for the Friendship Festival in the US and Canada.
In 2002, Durban's Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company presented his danced version of Can Themba's The Suit, while Cekwana himself performed the lead in Ja-Nee which featured on the programme of the final FNB Dance Indaba.
He choreographed the opera earthdiving in 2003.

Winner of the 1995 Young Artist Award.
He has won a number of awards, including FNB Vita Choreographer of the Year award, an FNB Vita Dance Indaba Most Outstanding Male Dancer award and FNB Vita most outstanding male dancer prize (1999).
