Gay Morris (19**-). Academic, actress, director.


Biography

She was one of the major forces in TAG, a co-ordinating body and cultural organisation formed in 1990.

She served on the Performing Arts committee, 1990s.

She was head of University of Cape Town Drama Department until 2003. Joined Drama for Life at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in March 2015.

As actress

She had a part in the workshopped production All in a Tangle...Op 'n Hoop Geknoop.

Roles in Peer Gynt (1968), When Thou Art King (1971), Biography (CAPAB 1971), The Tragedy of Tragedies, or The Life and Death of Tom Thumb the Great (CAPAB 1972), A Flea in Her Ear (CAPAB 1971).

As director

1968: La Musica (UCT Dramatic Society)

1971: The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (University of Cape Town's Speech and Drama Department)

1990: Dumela Talulah

1991: The Heaven Hunter

2003: a UCT students’ production of Mary Barnes

She was voice coach for the UCT Drama Department 1980 production of Marat/Sade.

As playwright

She wrote the play The Heaven Hunter in 1991.

As writer/academic

Her master’s thesis on Rosalie van der Gucht was completed in 1989.

She wrote a number of articles that were published in academic journals such as South African Theatre Journal and Theatre Research International.

She was one of the editors of the 2014 publication Playing Culture: Conventions and Extensions of Performance. Amsterdam: Rodopi.
