Bafana Republic 1 is a satirical play about South African society, written by Mike van Graan

Part of the Bafana Republic series by Van Graan. Originally called simply Bafana Republic, the name was altered to Bafana Republic 1 to fit in as the first play in the series.

Performance history in South Africa

2007: In draft form, the play had its first public performances as Bafana Republic at the Franschhoek Literary Festival on 11 and 12 May.

2007: Its first, full production opened at On Broadway on Tuesday 29 May and ran till Saturday 16 June. Directed by Lara Bye, with Lindiwe Matshikiza and a technical support team consisting of James Webb (sound), Jaco Bouwer (movement and vimeo) and Jesse Kramer with subsequent performances at National Arts Festival, Grahamstown (28 June-7 July 2007); 969 Festival, Wits University, Johannesburg (25-29 July 2007); Hilton Arts Festival, Pietermaritzburg (14-16 September 2007); Aardklop Arts Festival, Potchefstroom (25-28 September 2007); Prince Albert, opening of new theatre (29-30 September 2007); Catalina Theatre, Durban (2-28 October 2007); Market Theatre, Johannesburg (3 Nov-16 Dec 2007); Die Suidoosterfees, Artscape, Cape Town (29 Jan-9 February 2008).
