Based on the  novel ''Alva te Antwerpen, of De Wraak eens Vaders'' by Jan David de Vries (published by C.H. van Nederhasselt en Zoon in 1851), the stage version was written for use by the [[rederijkers]],   thus without roles for women. Printed in 1870.
