Alva's Schrikbewind, of De Wraak eens Vaders is a prose play in 8 scenes by A. A. van der Stempel Jr. (fl 1860s).

The original text

Based on the novel Alva te Antwerpen, of De Wraak eens Vaders by Jan David de Vries (published by C.H. van Nederhasselt en Zoon in 1851), the stage version was written for use by members of the rederijkers movement, thus without roles for women. Printed in 1870 and first performed on Monday 21 November 1870 in Enkhuizen by members of De Rederijkerskamer S. J. van den Bergh.

Performance history in South Africa

1876: Performed on 30 October in the Athenaeum Hall, Cape Town, as De Wraak eens Vaders by De Eendracht, with Weg met de Emancipatie, of Zonder Vrouwen is geen Leven (De Stempel).

1879: Performed at the Odd Fellows’ Hall, Cape Town, as De Wraak eens Vaders by De Eendracht on 24 July and 7 August, followed by a ballet performance, choreographed by J.C. Combrink and performed with the help of the musical association Spes Bona.
