Circa 1970, Friday's Bread On Monday: Early one morning Zach Skweyiya noticed a group of small kids walking in the area. He asked where they were headed so early. They told him they were heading for Brito’s Bakery to buy bread. (Brito’s Bakery is still located in Haupt Street, Sydenham.) Skweyiya asked why they were headed for Brito's as there was a cafe much closer to where they lived. They acknowledged the existence of the cafe but told him that at Britos they could get five loaves for five cents. In those days a loaf of bread cost 14c. "You get Friday’s bread on Monday.” The bakery would bake the bread on Friday but customers could only purchase leftover bread on Monday morning. Inspired by this encounter, Skweyiya took the idea to the rest of the Serpent Players and after a brainstorming session, they did some research in the township and wrote a touching theatrical piece called Friday’s Bread on Monday.
