Venus vs Modernity is a play by Lebo Mashile (1979- ).

The original text

A play about South African icon Saartjie Baartman, it was developed by Mashile with the help of actress and director Pamela Nomvete for the best part of five years. When Nomvete left the country for Englandthe poet and playwright Koleka Putuma took over as the director to stage the play.

Performance history in South Africa

2019: First performed at The Barney Simon theatre, at the Market Theatre, directed by Koleka Putuma with Anne Masina (as "Venus") and Lebo Mashile (as "Saartjie"). The sound technician was Mthuthuzeli Ndlebe and the stage manager Lebeisa Molapo.
