Ulibambe Lingashoni / Hold Up the Sun
Not to be confused with the 1995 stage play called Hold Up the Sun by Julian Seleke Mokoto
The Television Series
Ulibamba Lingashoni: the ANC and Popular Power in the Making (Hold back the sun) was a five part television series that was released in 1993 and provided a comprehensive history of the African National Congress (ANC). Made by Afravision for the Toron and Thebe Investment Corporation, it was compiled from contemporary and archival footage, and included extracts from interviews with many individuals involved in the anti-apartheid struggle. Produced by Jeremy Nathan, it was narrated by John Kani and had an original score by Jonas Gwangwa. Each 50-minute episode had a different director:
Episode 1: Roots of Struggle 1912-1948 (Director: Lesley Lawson), Episode 2: Enter the Masses 1949-1958 (Director: Brian Tilley), Episode 3: Submit or Fight 1958-1969 (Director: Laurence Dworkin), Episode 4: The New Generation 1968-1983 (Director: Clarence Hamilton), Episode 5: Not the Kings and Generals 1983-1990 (Director: Mokonenyana Molete).
