University of Pretoria Drama Department

The University of Pretoria Drama Department (Afrikaans: Universiteit van Pretoria Drama Departement) is a tertiary level drama and theatre training facility.

History

Founded in 1965 by Professor Geoff Cronjé, it was originally named the Departement Dramatologie ("Department Dramatology"), later renamed the Universiteit van Pretoria Drama Departement. The original staff consisted of Cronje with full-time lecturers like Anna Neethling-Pohl, Neels Hansen, and some part time lecturers. Over the years the staff would include Francois Swart, Hannes Horne, Fred Steyn, Carel Trichardt, Louw Odendaal

At the beginning of the 21st century all the arts Departments (including Drama) at the University were incorporated into a larger entity known as the School of the Arts: Drama[1] at the University of Pretoria.

Contribution to South African theatre, film, media and performance

The department has over the years produced numerous leading figures in the theatre and performance industry, among them Johan Botha, Neels Coetzee, George Ballot,

Selection of productions by the Department

1967: Drama Drie, a programme of two one-act plays and a revue performed by the first batch of 3rd years students.
