Tot Nut van't Algemeen

Tot Nut van't Algemeen ("For the Use of Everyone", 1805-1870) was an Arts and Sciences Society first founded in Holland in 1784, and introduced to the Cape by De Mist and Janssens under Dutch rule, during the so called Batavian period (March 1802 and January 1806), claiming the it was "the first proof shown to afford life and growth to the arts and sciences in the country".

Founded in 1803, the society became the Dutch school with the best reputation for preparatory education in the Cape for most of the century. According to F.C.L. Bosman (1980) it eventually had to close in 1870, largely under the pressure from the British colonial government to Anglicise education in the Cape Colony.
