Theo Wassenaar

Theo(dorus) Wassenaar (1892-1982) was an Afrikaans poet and Greek classicist who translated works into Afrikaans.

Biography

Studied medicine in Amsterdam, and became an optician in Pretoria. His publications include a personal work entitled Uit my Griekse Dagboek (1939) that reveals his love for the Greek classics. Wassenaar also did a series of translations of these classics including Koning Oedipus (1937), Antigone (by Sophocles) (1975) and Elektra (1977). He published a volume of poetry entitled Gedigte in 1919.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

His translation Koning Oedipus was produced by the Volksteater in Pretoria in 1938, directed by Isobel de Waal, starring H.J. Oberholzer in the lead. (See also: Classical Theatre in South Africa in Section 1).
