There are two South African dramatic works with this title

The Road: a play by Zakes Mda

First published in The Plays of Zakes Mda by Ravan Press, followed by And the Girls in their Sunday Dresses: Four Works, Witwatersrand University Press, 1993.

First performed at the Little Theatre, Ohio University, directed by Seabury Quinn Jr. in 1982. Awarded the Christina Crawford Award (of the then American Theater Association) in 1984.

First production in Lesotho was by Lesiba Players in 1985,

Performance history in South Africa

1987: First South African production by Soyikwa Institute of African Theatre at the Funda Centre in Johannesburg..

The Road: A telenovela

The series

A TV series depicting a tale of love, loss, murder and music, set against the backdrop of iconic Sophiatown in the 1950s and in modern day.


Created by Catherine Stewart, it features a cast that includes Muzi Mthabela, Nandi Ngoma, Tsholofelo Maseko, Moneoa Moshesh, Solomon Sebothoma, Sithembiso Khoza, Gail Mabalane, Neo Ntlatleng, Sthandiwe Kgoroge and Darlington Michaels.

Broadcast on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161) in 2015-2016.
