The Prisoner of Zenda

The Prisoner of Zenda is an 1895 play by Edward Rose (1849-1904), adapted from the 1894 adventure novel by Anthony Hope.

The original story

The play opened in New York in 1895 starring E.H. Sothern and the next year in the West End in London starring George Alexander and Evelyn Millard.

Translations and adaptations

Performance history in South Africa

1899: Presented by W.J. Holloway and his New English Company as part of a season of plays performed at the Opera House, Cape Town in July.

1901: Presented by W.J. Holloway's English Company at the Opera House, Cape Town in September/October.

1903: Presented by Leonard Rayne's New Dramatic Company at the Opera House, Cape Town in February, and at the Standard Theatre, Johannesburg in May, directed by Frank de Jong.
