The Mendicant is a drama in two acts by Gilbert Abbott à Beckett (1811 – 30 August 1856)[1]


The original text

First performed at St. James's Theatre, Feb. 1, 1836 and published in London by J. Cumberland / Thomas Hailes Lacy , 1836/7.

Translations and adaptations

Performance history in South Africa

1854: Performed by the City Amateur Theatrical Society on Monday 21 August in the Dutch Company's Bree Street Theatre (corner of Dorp Street), Cape Town, with Mr J. Boxer in the lead and Mrs Arlington played "Marie". The play was followed by The First Floor (Cobb) and The Secret! (Morris).
