The Diary of One Who Vanished is a song cycle by Leoš Janáček and Ozef Kalda in an English version by Seamus Heaney.

The original text

This unconventional song cycle tells the story of a naive young villager who falls desperately in love with a wild gypsy girl and leaves the life he knows to follow her.

Performance history in South Africa

2025: Presented in a double bill with Frauenliebe und Leben by Cape Town Opera at the Wave Theatre as part of Cape Town Opera Shorts: a Festival of Short Operas!. Directed by Christine Crouse, musical direction by Jeremy Silver, starring Vuyisa Xipu and Nica Reinke, with production design by Allegra Bernacchioni, video design by Kirsti Cumming, lighting design by Luke Ellenbogen.
