The Dark Lady of the Sonnets is a short comedy by George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950).

The original text

First performed in the Haymarket Theatre in London in 1910, it has William Shakespeare, intending to meet the "Dark Lady", accidentally encountering Queen Elizabeth I and then attempts to persuade her to create a national theatre.

The play was written as part of a campaign to create a "Shakespeare National Theatre" by 1916.

Translations and adaptations

The play was made into an opera by Philip Hagemann (2008).

Performance history in South Africa

1967: Performed in Bloemfontein by the University of the Orange Free State Dramatic Society, directed by Johan Bernard with Carol-Ann du Preez, Ben Lubbe, and Temple Hauptfleisch.
