The play is by Simon Stephens is based on the novel of the same name by Mark Haddon and tell the story of the mystery surrounding the death of a neighbour's dog that is investigated by young Christopher Boone, who is autistic, and explores his relationships with his parents and school mentor.
The play premiered on 2 August 2012 in the Cottesloe Theatre at the Royal National Theatre in London before transferring to the Apollo Theatre in the West End on 12 March 2013. The novel had won a number of awards the year it was published, including the Whitbread Book Award, the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best First Book and the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize. During its premiere run, the play likewise raked in the awards, tying the record for winning the most Olivier Awards (seven), including Best New Play at the 2013 ceremony.
The Broadway production opened at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on 5 October 2014 and closed on 4 September 2016. It won the 2015 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, 2015 Outer Critics Circle Award Outstanding New Broadway Play, the 2015 Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Broadway or Off-Broadway Play, and the 2015 Tony Award for Best Play.

Performance history in South Africa
2018: Produced by Pieter Toerien, directed by Paul Warwick Griffin, it was performed as the opening production of the newly renovated Theatre on the Bay in Cape Town from 22 September to 3 November. The cast consisted of Kai Brummer, Ashley Dowds, Jenny Stead, Lesoko Seabe, Kate Normington, Liz Szymczak, Dylan Edy, Nicholas Ellenbogen, Genna Galloway and Clayton Evertson. Lighting and AV design by Gareth Hewitt Williams (for which he received two Naledi Awards in 2019).
2018: The production then played at the Pieter Toerien Montecasino Theatre and Studio in Johannesburg from 7 November to 2 December.
