The Blue Iris is a play by Athol Fugard (1932-).


The play

The story which revolves around the gradual disintegration of a marriage through misunderstanding, neglect and disappointment as told in the reminiscences and regrets of widower farmer Robert Hannay and the heart-wrenching sadness of his loyal farm worker and wife's companion - Rieta.

Productions

2012: The play had its world premiere at the National Arts Festival in July . In celebration of Athol Fugard's 80th birthday, the Fugard Theatre announced a 5 week season of the play at the Fugard Theatre Studio,directed by Janice Honeyman and starring Claire Berlein (Sally Hannay), Graham Weir (Robert Hannay) and Lee-Ann van Rooi (Rieta Plaasman). Pusetso Thsibedi was the Assistant Director, lighting design by Mannie Manim, set design by Dicky Longhurst and costume design by Birrie le Roux. This production was also staged at the Market Theatre in September.
