The Black Mikado

The Black Mikado. An adaptation of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado, set on a Caribbean island, with the book by Janos Bajtala, George Larnyoh, Eddie Quansah. It opened in London in 1975 and after finishing its West End season, it toured the provincial cities.

Performance history in South Africa

1976: Des and Dawn Lindberg opened their production of this musical at the Diepkloof Hall in Soweto on 13 May 1976. It went on to play in Coronationville and at the Loreto Convent in Pretoria, Pietersburg, Pietermaritzburg and Durban’s Lyric Theatre before opening at the Brooke on 29 July 1976. It starred Ben "Satch" Masinga, Thandi Klaasen, Barrie Shah, Leslie Mongezi, Des Lindberg, Patrick Ndlovu, Duke Makasi, Sammy Brown, Sue Keil, Felicia Marion, Sipho Gumede and the band “Spirits Rejoice”.

It was the first West End musical to premiere in Soweto.
