Soundscape
According to Wikipedia a Soundscape is "the component of the acoustic environment that can be perceived by humans. There is a varied history of the use of soundscape depending on discipline - ranging from urban design to wildlife ecology."
The range of meaning referred to includes the specific theatrical sense in which the ESAT encyclopaedia uses it, i.e. to refer to a meaningful design created by an acoustic artist through sound rather than (or in addition to) a set of visual, verbal and kinetic images. The use of sound generated imagery is also part of this activity and is increasingly found today as the use of digital technology has expanded into all forms of performance - particularly music and performance art[1].
Soundscape is seen as integral creative part of the performed work, (also its message or meaning), and is not to be confused with the use of normal or traditional sound effects or music in a musical work as enhancement of the production.
