The original text
A free adaptation by Bunsen of Siegfried von Lindenberg, a German comic novel by Johann Gottwerth Müller (published in 1781/1782). The five act play was performed and published in 1790.
Translations and adaptations
Translated into Dutch and published as Siegfried van Lindenberg in Amsterdam by Hendrik Gartman, Willem Vermandel, and Jan Willem Smit in 1790/1791. Performed in The Royal Dutch Theatre at the Hague in 1808.
Performance history in South Africa
1829: Performed by the amateur company Tot Nut en Vermaak on 31 October with as afterpiece De Engelsche Goederen (Von Kotzebue). The title given by Bosman (1928, p. 242) is the German version Siegfried von Lindenberg, however the performance was most likely in Dutch, using the 1790/91 translation. Bosman also refers to it as a play in three acts, though the original was a five act play.
