School of Rock SA musical (2008)

A rock musical, based on the 2003 film (originally written by Mike White), created for performance by the Durban based Young Performers' Project in 2008, adzpted and directed by Themi Venturas.

Unlike the surrealism and slapstick comedy of the movie, the musical takes a more realistic look at events at Hilltop High, a private school, seeking to "speak with a South African voice" in the words of Themi Venturas. The school is in desperate need of a replacement music teacher. Barney Jones is hired, but breaks the rules to teach the kids about rock 'n roll and relieving the pressures imposed on them by academics.

The original text

An international rock musical, also based on the 2003 film (orignally written by Mike White), it was created by Andrew Lloyd Webber (music), Glenn Slater (lyrics) and Julian Fellowes (book). The musical had its world premiere at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway, opening on 6 December, 2015. Its West End debut was at the Gillian Lynne Theatre on 14 November, 2016.
