Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
Ronnie grew up in Athlone in the Cape and, as a youngster, he would regularly make his way to Kalk Bay where he would sing for tourists. He was soon performing in nightclubs in Cape Town. When he was 14 years old Clive Caulder and Ralph Simon, who were managing Richard Jon Smith at the time, spotted him and invited him to open for Smith at his concerts. Jonathan Butler and Lionel Petersen were also on the tour. He was an immediate hit and would record a number of singles as well as one with Butler. After his initial success, he dropped the ‘Little’ in front of his name and continued recording. He would spend some time working with LaStique (post their SA chart success) and The Rockets. Shortly before he died he would perform again with Jonathan Butler and Lionel Petersen.
