FAURE, Rev. A. (?). Clergyman through whose efforts the Dutch churches took the lead in establishing the Zuid-Afrikaansche Athenaeum in 1829. Earlier, in 1824, he had established the Nederduitsch Zuid-Afrikaansch Tydschrift. His enthusiasm in promoting Dutch culture has sometimes earned him the sobriquet of the Father of South African Literature. (Bosman, 1928;) [JH]
