Provinces of South Africa
As part of the negotiations surrounding the liberation of the country and the installation of the first demographically elected government in South Africa in 1994, the original four provinces were increased to nine, and a large number of place and regional names have also been changed for numerous reasons.
In the historical articles in this encyclopaedia, the old names are normally retained, while articles or entries on newer events may use the new names.
For information on the history of the names of provinces and the shift from the old to the new names of provinces in South Africa since 1994, see the entry on "Provinces of South Africa" in ESAT, as well as the entry by the same name in Wikipedia[1]
For information on the new names of places in South Africa, see the "List of renamed places in South Africa" in Wikipedia[2]
