Die Goldne Spinne ("The golden spider") is a German comedy in four acts by Franz von Schönthan(1849-1913)[1]

The original text

First performed on 21 January, 1885 in the Carltheater, Vienna, and published as Die goldne Spinne in Leipzig by Reclam, ca. 1885.

Translations and adaptations

According to F.C.L. Bosman (1980, p. 484), translated into Dutch as Politiezaken ("Police matters") by Jac. de Vos (also written as Politie-zaken), performed in the Leidse Schouwburg, Leiden, in 1893 and by the Vereniging tot bevordering van uiterlijke welsprekendheid "Bogaers" in Koog-Zaandijk, ca. 1897.

Performance history in South Africa

1907: Performed in Dutch (as Politiezaken) in the Empress Theatre, Pretoria, by the Rederijkerskamer by Onze Taal, Pretoria, probably directed by P.A. Welswijk.
