Oscar et la Dame rose

Oscar et la Dame rose is a French play by Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt (1960-)

A play about a terminally ill young hospital patient and his uplifting relationship with an elderly volunteer "Pink Lady," whose daily visits provide him with inspiration and hope.

Based on his original French novel Oscar et le Dame rose (2002), adapted for the stage by Schmitt, it was first staged on 7 February, 2003 at the Comédie des Champs-Elysées, directed by Christophe Lidon, it was with Danielle Darrieux in the lead.

Versions also done by Anny Duperey in France, Jacqueline Bir in Belgium, Rita Lafontaine in Québec, among others. The original production broadcast on France 3 television (2007) and the story filmed by the author himself in 2009, with Michèle Laroque as "Mamie Rose" (2009).

Translations and adaptations

Translated into English as Oscar and the Pink Lady. The English version performed by Naomi Harris in New York in 2009.

Translated into Afrikaans from the French as Oskar en die Pienk Tannie by Naòmi Morgan.

South African productions

A one-woman South African version of the Afrikaans text was directed by Lara Bye with Sandra Prinsloo, and opened at the Vryfees in Bloemfontein 2012, then toured the major festivals (including Aardklop and the KKNK) between 2012 and 2014 winning numerous awards for the director, the play and the actress. Lighting design Pieter-Jan Kapp, with background music by Braam du Toit.

The English version performed by the same company at the Baxter Golden Arrow Theatre from 29 July until 23 August 2014, with another run of the Afrikaans version in the same venue from 5 to 9 August 2014.
