Ont- is a one-man show by Wessel Pretorius. First performed in 2012.

Subject

Set in South Africa in the 2010's, it is the story of an Afrikaner boy turning into a man in a country that is also changing.

"Dis ’n eenmanvertoning oor die reis van grootword en die ontnugtering wat daarmee gepaardgaan. Dis ’n studie oor die emosionele samestelling van ’n familie en die vreugdes van vryheid en vlug. Die proses van grootword, word met deernis geskets met behulp van die Groot Verseboek, ma se grammofoonspeler en Pa se Camel Filters." (Programme note, KKNK 2013)

Translations and adaptations

The text was translated into English by Hennie van Greunen, under the title Undone.

Performance history in South Africa

2012: Premiered at the Woordfees 2012, first in the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town and then in the Little Libertas Theatre in Stellenbosch, performed and directed by Wessel Pretorius. Voted the best drama production.

2013: Performed and directed by Pretorius at the KKNK in Oudsthoorn.

2015: Pretorius performed the original Afrikaans text Ont- and the Van Greunen English translation Undone on alternative nights for a season at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg.
