R. Norcliffe

R. Norcliffe (fl. mid 19th century) was a British military officer (possibly of the 9th Regiment and/or the 99th Regiment), a performer and a singer of comic songs.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

While stationed in Cape Town , he is listed as a stalwart of the Lanarkshire Dramatic Club of the 99th Regiment and seemingly a regular performer for the 86th Royal Downshire Minstrels.

Besides acting in various plays, his repertoire of comic songs included "I always was a Swell" (sung "in costume") and what they styled "Comic Negro Songs".
