'night, Mother is a play by Marsha Norman (1947- ) [1].


The original text

A play for two women written in 1983. It won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Drama [2].

Translations and adaptations

Translated and adapted into Afrikaans under the title Nag, Ma by Antoinette Louw.

Performance history in South Africa

1983: Barney Simon’s production, starring Janice Honeyman and Julie Follansbee, was staged in the Laager in September.

2008:Presented by Fett Diva Productions at the Square Space Theatre, UKZN, directed by Tanya van der Walt, July 2008, starring, among others, Tamar Meskin.

2011: Nag, Ma, the Louw Afrikaans translation, was staged at the Vryfees in Bloemfontein and later at the Grahamstown Festival, directed by Lara Bye, with Sandra Prinsloo (Mother, Thelma) and Antoinette Louw (Jessie). Also performed at Aardklop Festival in 2011.

2012: Nag, Ma, the Louw Afrikaans translation, was staged at the Woordfees 2012, first in the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town and then in the Little Libertas Theatre in Stellenbosch, directed by Lara Bye, with Sandra Prinsloo (Mother, Thelma) and Antoinette Louw (Jessie).
