The original text
Usually listed as a comedy in two acts, it appears to have been first performed by Matthews in 1856,either in London or in New York. However, an undated published text by Dick & Fitzgerald, New York, has it as a comedy in three acts.

Performance history in South Africa
1885: Performed by the Henry Harper and his company in the Theatre Royal, Cape Town, opening on March 19th. The cast included Disney Roebuck, H.C. Sidney, H. Harries, Constance Young, Alice Norton, and others.
