Mshengu Publications is a subsidiary of Themba Books, a family publishing house established by Robert Mshengu Kavanagh, Naima B. Roberts and Gugu Ushewokunze-McLaren in memory of Thembani Ndiya Nene, their late wife and mother. It sets out to assist African writers to publish their work, focussing on African stories from an African perspective. In order to cope with publications which did not necessarily fit into Themba’s portfolio, Kavanagh established his own publishing project, Mshengu Publications, and one of Mshengu Publications’ projects is the Selected Plays series.

Seven collections of plays have now been published in the Selected Plays series:

  • The Theatre of Workshop ’71
  • The Political Theatre of Zambuko/Izibuko
  • The New Horizon Youth Theatre
  • Three Southern African Plays
  • CHIPAWO Children’s Plays
  • It Starts with a Death: Four Plays on Wills and Inheritance
  • All That’s Left: Four Playscripts
