Moumou is a 1944 farce for adult audiences by French playwright Jean de Létraz (1897-1954) [1].

Translations and adaptations

Translated into English as Pyjama Tops by Mawby Green and Ed Feilbert in the 1950s.

Translated into Afrikaans as Jôli-Jôli by Mikro.

Performance history in South Africa

1963: Pyjama Tops, the English translation, staged by the Brian Brooke Company in the Brooke Theatre in Johannesburg, directed by Valerie Miller, with Leonne Carnot (Claudine), Roger Spence (Inspector Legrand), Nina Alova (Yvonne Chauvinet), Victor Melleney (Georges Chauvinet), Brian Brooke (Leonard Jolijoli), Elaine Lee (Babette Latouche) and Bill Brewer (Jacques). decor by Pamela Lewis.

1977: PACT staged the Mikro Afrikaans translation Jôli-Jôli in the Breytenbach Theatre in Pretoria and the Alexander Theatre in Johannesburg, directed by Louis van Niekerk, featuring Harriet Pienaar (Claudine), David van der Merwe (Inspekteur Legrand), Louise Mollett-Prinsloo (Yvonne Chauvinet), Louis van Niekerk (Georges Chauvinet), Gerben Kamper (Leonard Jôli-Jôli), Elise Hibbert (Babette Latouche), and John Harley (Jacques). Decor by Jan Hamers and costumes by Anthoinette Lombard.

1979-80: Pyjama Tops, the English translation, staged by the Toerien-Firth Company at the André Huguenet Theatre, opening 9 November, and at the Baxter Theatre, directed by Alexander Doré, with Leonne Carnot, Len Sparrow-Hawk, Ivan Berold, Tobie Cronjé, Volenté Bertotti, Peter J. Elliott, Sandy Wahba, Charmaine Jay, Tinah Lebea and Martina Stöckl.

1981: Another production of Pyjama Tops, staged by the Toerien-Firth Company at the Baxter Theatre, this time directed by Peter J. Elliott, with Leonne Carnot, Len Sparrow-Hawk, Caroline Fox, Michael Findlay, Jimmy Thompson, Kryska Witkowska, Peter J. Elliott, Sandy Wahba, Tinah Lebea, Bernadine Bezuidenhout and Geraldine Fitzgerald.

Performed in Afrikaans by SUKOVS, entitled Jollie-Jollie, date unknown.{Folder containing three mounted black and white photographs of Hannes Muller, Elzette Maarschalk and Michelle Burgess in scenes from the PACOFS production of Jollie, jollie, held by NELM: [Collection: Performing Arts Council Orange Free State (PACOFS)]: 2009. 67. 1. 2. 21).
