Michael Titlestad

Michael Titlestad (19**-) is an academic and literary and cultural critic.

Biography

Born Michael Frank Titlestad in Pretoria. Completed a BA, an MA dissertation on Representations of Jazz Music and Performance Occasions in Selected Literature (University of South Africa, 1999) and a Ph.D. Thesis in 2002.

He is today a Professor in the Department of English at the University of the Witwatersrand.

His research interests include South African literary and cultural studies, Modernism and maritime literature and he is the author of a monograph, Making the Changes: Jazz in South African Literature and Reportage, and over fifty research articles and chapters in books. In addition, he edits literary fiction and is an active book reviewer. He is the co-editor (with Sofia Kostelac) of English Studies in Africa, the oldest literary studies journal in the country.

He was for a while a council member of the National English Literary Museum in Grahamstown.
