Mary and the Conqueror is a play by Juliet Jenkin.

The original text

Commissioned by Artscape for production at the seventh Artscape Spring Drama Season, it is play about a chance meeting between an author and her subject ). It thus imagines an encounter between the author Mary Renault and her hero, Alexander the Great, as well as Renault’s lifelong companion and lover, Julie Mullard, and one of Alexander’s lovers, Hephaistion.

Performance history in South Africa

2011: Performed as the first play at the seventh Artscape Spring Drama Season, on 29 and 30 September (in pre-view), then ran from 1 to 15 October. Directed by Roy Sergeant with Diane Wilson, Adrienne Pearce, Armand Aucamp and Francis Chouler. Design by Alfred Rietmann, sound design by Lynley Pillay.

2012 Performed once again at Artscape in July as part of the Artscape New Writing Programme 2011 presentations.
