Marietha Channell

Marietha Channell (1949-) is an actress and theatre administrator.

Biography

Born Marietha Snyman and raised in the Northern Cape, she completed a B.Dram, at the University of Stellenbosch in 1970.

After her marriage she lived in Australia from 1974 to 1979, where both her children, the Thomas and Sara, were born. While there she worked as a Stage Manager for the West Australian Opera Company in 1975.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

She acted in student productions such as Eurydice, Don Juan onder die Boere, Die Bruidskool and in the early 1970s she was a member of a puppet company with Ben Dehaeck, Joleen du Plessis and Dawie Malan. The puppets were made by artist Jan Vermeiren.

On television she acted in several roles in Manie van Rensburg's series Dokter Con Viljee se Overberg.

In 184 she became the well known Theatre Manager of the Oude Libertas Theatre (1984-2005) and after retirement also Artistic Manager of the Voorkamerfees (2005-2008).

She was one of the arts directors of the KKNK, 2003-2004, and in 2009 was one of the judges for the Smeltkroes Prize for best Afrikaans drama text..
