Magyar Melody

Magyar Melody is a musical comedy adapted by Eric Maschwitz and George Posford from the play Paprika by Eric Maschwitz, Fred Thompson and Guy Bolton. The music was composed by George Posford and Bernard Grun.

Original text

A simple tale of an aristocratic Englishman and opera composer, whose Hungarian gypsy love becomes an operetta star and conquers Budapest, but fails to conquer the social world of London. She returns to her homeland, to be followed, at the last moment, by her lover.

The work was premiered at the Opera House, Manchester on 29 Nov, 1938.

Performance history in South Africa

1954: Presented by the EOAN Group in the Cape Town City Hall with 100 performers accompanied by the Cape Town Municipal Orchestra.
