Madimba Institute of African Music was based at the Funda Centre in Soweto.

Madimba was formed to redress the existing imbalances between cultural, vocational and academic development of the African child. Madimba aimed to provide a rounded music education, as a means to redirect the process of change in black education.

Motsumi Makhene was the leader of the music section at Funda, and Mhlanganisi Masoga was on the teaching staff.

In 1992, the Madimba Institute of African Music devised a programme of free public performances. Another free public event was Melodi Festival of African Music, which featured The African Jazz Pioneers, the Afrojazz band Thayima and Sibongile Khumalo.
