Love and Green Onions is a jazz opera composed by Denzil Weale with a libretto by Michael Williams an orchestration by Peter McLea.

The original text

Based on Zakes Mda’s novel Ways of Dying. The music includes indigenous styles such as kwela, kwaito and marabi songs.

Performance history in South Africa

2001: Presented by Cape Town Opera at the National Arts Festival (June 28 and 30) and at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town (19–28 July), featuring Gloria Bosman, Marcus Desando and Fikile Mvinjelwa and Cape Town Opera Vocal Ensemble. Directed by Michael Williams. Conducted by Graham Scott. Chorus Master: Allan Stephenson.
